A resolute Nigerian named Oluwasegun Olusoji-Ojelade overcame major obstacles to graduate as both an engineer and a chartered accountant, earning a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) after a drawn-out 12-year journey rather than the usual five years. Oluwasegun shared his motivational story on LinkedIn, attributing his success to God’s grace and fortitude while considering his early mistakes, academic setbacks, and the delays brought on by the nationwide ASUU strikes.
Despite these obstacles, he remained dedicated to his objectives and accomplished outstanding feats, such as becoming an Associate Accounting Technician (AAT) and receiving certifications from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).
Along the way, he managed nationwide projects for a multinational corporation, accumulated more than five years of professional experience in a variety of fields, and co-founded significant projects like SpaceBar Africa, which advances space science education, and the JOMO Climate Change Initiative, which promotes environmental sustainability.
Additionally, Oluwasegun created Growth Deck, a WhatsApp group with more than 2,000 members that offers job updates and career guidance. Both the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers (NSChE) and the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) inducted him as a Graduate Member. He told his story to encourage people going through difficult times to keep going and have faith in the process.
Expressing gratitude to his family and friends for their unwavering support, Oluwasegun said, “Every step, every stumble, every delay is part of your journey. If I could rise from those challenges, so can you. Chin up!”
