Shukurah Ghali, a strong Nigerian lady, has fulfilled her aim of earning a PhD in Epidemiology and Population Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), the second-best public health school in the world and the top in the United Kingdom.
After years of tenacity and dedication, Shukurah shared her experience on LinkedIn, expressing her happiness at finally being able to walk the halls of her ideal university. Looking back on her journey, she disclosed that before landing this chance, she was turned down for 27 scholarships and programs. “Every single ‘no’ served as a diversion, preparing me for something much bigger than I ever could have dreamed,” she said.
Shukurah’s perseverance stemmed from her years of dedication, which included earning her Master’s degree from the University of Ilorin and working as the Presiding Veterinary Officer at the biggest abattoir in Nigeria, located in Ilorin. She persevered because of her faith and perseverance in the face of obstacles, self-doubt, and the weight of waiting.
Shukurah, who is now starting a significant global health research project at LSHTM, inspires people to follow their aspirations in spite of challenges. “Resilience, perseverance, and faith can really move mountains.” She wrote, “May your delulu become trululu—because mine just did!” to encourage others to keep going.
Shukurah looked back on her journey with gratitude for her family, friends, and God’s direction, saying, “Every rejection was leading me here, to the best possible path.” Her experience serves as a tribute to the strength of resiliency and unshakeable dedication to one’s objectives.
