Akwa Ibom, Police Detain a 13-Year-Old Student

Samuel Sunday, a 13-year-old pupil at St. Paul Primary School in Ikot Ibiok, Eket Local Government Area, was taken into custody by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command for threatening his peers while carrying a handmade firearm.

Public Relations Officer DSP Timfon John disclosed during a press conference at the Command’s headquarters in Ikot Akpan-Abia, Uyo, that the minor suspect was captured on January 30, 2025, after stealing the firearm from his father’s closet on November 24, 2024.

John claims that the recovery of the pistol and the arrest of Samuel, his father, were the results of police acting on reliable information. “An investigation is ongoing,” she said.

According to John, “around 8:00 AM on January 30, 2025, we got credible information that 13-year-old Samuel Sunday, a student from Ikot Ibiok village in Eket LGA, was armed and threatening to shoot fellow students at school on January 28.”

The police officers acted quickly, capturing the culprit and confiscating the handgun that was created in the area. Samuel acknowledged under interrogation that he had been in possession of the firearm since November 2024 after taking it from his father’s bedroom.

Investigations are ongoing, and his father was later taken into custody. Additionally, according to the command, two women, Roseline Maurice and Eno Udoka, were arrested for plotting to kidnap a child in June 2024 at Obong Itam village, Itu LGA, and sell the victim to their regular client in Cross River State for N200,000.

According to the police, the suspects bought a refrigerator, television, and fan, among other household goods, with the money they received from the crime. All of these items have subsequently been found. John also brought attention to the arrests of members of a child trafficking organisation that preys on young girls and forces them into marriages with men in order to have children for sale.

“Our officers responded quickly to two 18-year-old girls’ complaints regarding an attempted trafficking scheme to Cross River State on February 1, 2025, and arrested Gift Essien Tommy and Peace Ekanem in a separate incident,” she continued.

A 60-year-old man who is suspected of defiling a nine-year-old child in a remote location and then offering her two hundred Naira was also paraded by the command.

John affirmed that after investigations were finished, all suspects would face charges in court. She added that Baba Mohammed Azare, the commissioner of police, is dedicated to ending illicit activity and crime in the state.
