At Government Girls Science and Technical College (GGSTC) on Gombe Road in Potiskum, Yobe State, several classrooms collapsed, injuring several pupils.
Many pupils were buried beneath the rubble when the tragedy happened on Thursday during school hours. The injured students were swiftly evacuated by emergency personnel and sent to the hospital for medical attention. Unfortunately, one student’s death has been confirmed.
Speaking about the disaster, Bukar Aji, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry for Basic and Secondary Education, revealed that the Specialist Hospital in Potiskum is providing medical care to the injured pupils, who are primarily SSII students.
He added that the State Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has been assigned the responsibility of looking into the collapse’s cause and coming up with a report.
In addition to offering the public reassurance that the government is still dedicated to preserving school infrastructure in order to stop similar occurrences in the future, Aji also offered condolences to the deceased’s family.
