The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Lagos State University (LASU) has called on students to disregard a recent statement from the LASU management and Students’ Union, which claimed that university activities were continuing despite the ongoing industrial action by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Other Related Institutions (NASU).
ASUU-LASU declared an indefinite strike on December 6, 2024, to protest the non-implementation of a Federal Government-approved salary increment of 25%/35% for its members, which has been pending since January 2023.
Additionally, ASUU-LASU raised concerns about salary disparities, noting that the staff of Lagos State University of Science and Technology and Lagos State University of Education have higher salaries than those at LASU.
The union pointed out that a government committee submitted a report on harmonizing salaries between these institutions, but the recommendations have not been implemented.
In their statement, ASUU-LASU urged students to maintain maturity, solidarity, and understanding as the situation unfolds. They also requested that students ignore the press release issued by the Students’ Union, asserting that the issue is a staff welfare matter and does not concern students.
ASUU-LASU affirmed that the strike aligns with the Joint Action Committee’s decision and has sent a letter to the Vice Chancellor and the Governor, who serves as the Visitor to the University.
