ASUU questions a rise in private university first-class degrees

Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, the National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has expressed concern over the increasing number of first-class degrees being awarded by private universities in Nigeria.

Speaking at Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, he warned that this trend could undermine academic standards, particularly if public universities begin adopting similar practices without proper regulation.

Osodeke raised the alarm about the potential erosion of academic integrity, citing the pressure to inflate grades, which could result in graduates with impressive honors but lacking essential practical knowledge and skills. He attributed part of the issue to weaknesses in the foundation provided by primary and secondary education, where students often excel in exams despite lacking fundamental competencies.

He called for reforms aimed at preserving the quality and credibility of Nigerian higher education. According to Osodeke, first-class honors should genuinely reflect academic excellence earned through hard work and mastery, rather than grade inflation.

This growing concern has sparked discussions about the true value of first-class degrees in Nigeria, with questions raised about whether the trend in private universities signals deeper challenges within the country’s education system.
