Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) administration said that the school has been closed indefinitely in response to a student demonstration on Monday over the death of a final-year student at the hands of a suspected gang of phone robbers.
According to the announcement, the Vice Chancellor gave his approval for the university to close for one week, starting on Monday, December 4, and ending on Sunday, December 10, 2023.
Undertakings on both campuses are therefore asked to leave the university grounds immediately, according to the statement, since noncompliance may result in appropriate punishment from the constituted authority.
It further instructed the Chief Security Officer and the Dean of the Student Affairs Division to make sure the direction is strictly followed.
In response, Zailani Bappa, Director of Information and Public Relations, declared that the Students Union Government (SUG) had distanced itself from the protest and that the university had closed to prevent the situation from getting worse.
“Every time there is a chance, the management extends an invitation to speak with the SUG. The administration got in touch with the student union government when the students began protesting this time, but they distanced themselves from what their peers were doing.
They have, I believe, lost their minds because not even the student union government, much less the management, was able to stop them from holding the protest. To prevent a breakdown of the law, the police undoubtedly deployed tear gas to disperse the gathering. He declared, “Someone should be tear-gassed than to let him harm or kill someone.”
The students were protesting the horrific death of their 500-level colleague, Joseph Obiaje Agabaidu, who worked in the Geology department. He was stabbed to death at the university’s Yelwa campus by robbers who were allegedly armed and attempted to take his phone.
