Monique Mendes has distinguished herself as the first Black woman to get a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Rochester in New York.
She is the second Black person to get a PhD in neuroscience from the institution and is part of a limited fraction of Black women holding such a degree in the United States.
Monique, a Jamaican native, expressed feelings of loneliness, often being the only Black woman in professional settings.
She found comfort through a Twitter campaign called @BlackinNeuro, which highlighted Black achievements in neuroscience and connected her with others facing similar challenges.
Monique’s passion for biology began in high school, leading her to work in a neuroscience lab where she researched strokes.
Her studies focused on microglia, the neuronal cells crucial for immune protection and memory. She plans to continue her research at Stanford University, exploring how glial cells influence learning and memory.
