What is COMPUTER ENGINEERING?

Computer engineering is a field of engineering that integrates computer science and electronic engineering to facilitate the development and maintenance of computer hardware and software.

Three hundred years ago, the foundation of computation was established by renowned philosophers and mathematicians such as Leibnitz, Pascal, Boole, and Babbage.

Five main components of computer hardware are described by the distinguished scientist John Von Neuman:

  1. Central Processing Unit (CPU),
  2. Unit of Input,
  3. Unit of Output,
  4. Working memory and
  5. Long-Term Memory.

There are numerous varieties of computers that fall under these three primary categories: Personal Computers, Server Computers, and Mainframe Computers. In this section, we will explore the most widely used and ubiquitous type of computer, the personal computer, also known as a PC.

IBM established the personal computer (PC) in 1981, which has significantly impacted communication. The PC was constructed by IBM using an Intel processor and the Microsoft Simple Disk Operating System (MS-DOS). Compaq, AST, and other companies subsequently entered the market and began to create their own hardware components.

A typical personal computer (PC) unit includes a monitor, system unit, keyboard, mouse, and occasionally additional peripherals such as scanners, printers, and speakers.

The exterior of the system unit:

  1. CD-ROM Drive Bay,
  2. Diskette Drive Bay,
  3. Power and Reset Buttons.
  4. Computer Case
  5. Keyboard
  6. Mouse

The interior of the system unit:

  1. The motherboard
  2. The processor
  3. Random Acess Memory (RAM),
  4. Read-only memory (ROM) chips that contain the BIOS and start-up applications.
  5. Ports (e.g., USB, PS2)
  6. Busses and expansion slots are reserved for expansion cards, including but not limited to graphics cards, network controllers, sound and video cards, TV cards, and ISDN cards.

Upon powering up, the fan motor will be audible, followed by the scrolling of text on the screen. The RAM test will be conducted, and a command will be received from the ROM, which will provide the POST and Basic Input Output System (BIOS) instructions. The operating system is the subsequent item to be read from the hard drive.

Personal Computers (PCs) operate on system software, which is also referred to as the operating system. There are numerous operating systems available in the market. The BIOS, which is located in the ROM processor, is in close collaboration with the operating system to facilitate communication with the hardware through the use of device drivers.

Device drivers consist of a collection of files or programs that regulate or operate each device connected to the computer. Each device has its own driver, facilitating its interaction with the operating system. In other terms, drivers facilitate the seamless communication between the operating system of a computer and hardware devices.
