Corps Member Died, Others Hurt in Crash on Ebonyi Road

On Wednesday, January 22, 2024, a terrible traffic accident in Ebonyi State claimed the life of an unnamed potential female National Youth Service Corps member.

According to a source in the region, she was travelling with 12 other potential corps members in a 14-seater bus that was bound for the NYSC orientation camp in Afikpo town, which is part of the state’s Afikpo Local Government region, for their three-week orientation course.

They were reportedly potential members of the corps members who reported to the camp that same day as the 2024 Batch C Stream II group.

According to reports, the Enugu North Mass Transit bus they were riding in collided with a parked truck next to the road.

According to reports, the dead passed away as a result of her injuries, while other passengers and her coworkers suffered varied degrees of harm.

After being saved by locals and security personnel, they were taken to the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences, where they are presently undergoing medical care.

“Corps members encountered an accident while travelling to the NYSC camp,” the source stated. The Amenu village in Okposi is where the accident occurred. One of the corps’ female members passed away.

Twelve of the fourteen passengers on the bus are corps members. Others were hurt.

The victims were taken to the hospital, according to a hospital source who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not permitted to discuss the situation.

Yes, I did see them that night. Officials from security brought them. According to the source, they are reacting to treatment.

Igwe Henry, the Federal Road Safety Corps’ Ebonyi State Sector Commander, acknowledged the collision but stated he was unable to provide any information regarding the number of people killed because the victims had been retrieved before his officers arrived on the scene.

“The victims had been rescued by the time our soldiers from Amasiri Unit Command received the information and arrived at the location,” he said. They were unable to determine the specifics of what transpired because they were not personally involved in the rescue.

But the collision happened on January 22 at around 1400 hours. Amasiri-Okiigwe, or Amenu village in Okposi, was the route. There were two vehicles involved: a commercial Mercedes-Benz tipper (truck) and a grey Toyota commercial bus.

According to early research, the bus, a commercial vehicle, may have been at fault for the incident due to its excessive speed. However, as I mentioned earlier, the victims were really saved by onlookers and transported to David Umahi Hospital in Uburu, thus the specifics about the number of injuries and other data have not been determined.

Following that, I understand that one Chief Amos of the Amenu Village in the same Oposi is in charge of the objects found at the scene. In reality, the ones my men saw at King David’s Hospital were in stable condition.

Mrs. Foluke Oladeinde, the State NYSC Coordinator, attested to the accident as well.

“I am not feeling well enough to converse right now. I am currently in the hospital. She acknowledged that the accident had happened, but she was unable to speak at the moment.
