Despite having high post-test scores, here are five reasons why most students are not admitted.

Despite having an extremely high UTME score, the majority of applicants are frequently left perplexed while attempting to determine why they were not granted admission to the university of their choice. A strong post-UTME score does not always equate to admission.

You may see the five reasons on this page why some students with excellent post-UTME scores are not admitted.

Top 5 Reasons Applications Are Turned Down for Entrance

1) Incorrect UTME combo

This is among the causes for which some students are not admitted even if they meet the post-UTME cut-off mark. However, occasionally, during the first-year registration procedure, some students are either denied admission or transferred to a different department for no other reason than that they selected the incorrect JAMB subject combination.

For example, a student who applied to study mass communication but did not take Literature in English as one of the four courses for the UTME test would undoubtedly be denied admission, depending on the institution. In the same way, a student who wants to study electronics and physics together should absolutely choose physics for his UTME subject combination.

A student should carefully read the JAMB Brochure to determine the appropriate subject combination for their course of study before filling out the JAMB form.

We advise you to switch to a course that suits your subject combination if you have previously selected a course with the incorrect UTME subject combination.

2) The catchment region of the university

The catchment area strategy is still used by the majority of federal institutions, as well as a few state universities when choosing applicants for admission.

For example, the majority of the states in the UNILAG catchment region are in the South West. This suggests that applicants from the South West have a better probability of being accepted. An applicant from Osun State who scored 56 and wants to study sociology, for instance, may be allowed admission, whereas an applicant from Imo State who got 60 would not.

In light of the aforementioned, prospective students should always be informed about the prerequisites and catchment region of an institution before choosing one.

3) Poor Score on the UTME

I sometimes feel sorry for the majority of Jambites who have scores between 180 and 210 since they reduce their chances of being admitted when they have to compete with students who receive scores of 250 and above for the same admission slot.

Additionally, the majority of colleges still use both UTME and post-UTME results to determine a student’s average score.

As a result, receiving a poor UTME score may also make it more difficult to be admitted. To be safe, it is usually advised that students aim for a score of 250 or above.

On the other hand, you should aim for a very high post-test score if your institution administers an exam and your UTME score is relatively low. By doing this, you are ensuring your place on the merit admission list.

4) Incorrect O-level subjects

Even if you do well on the post-UTME, you may not be able to get into the course if you do not have the appropriate O-level subjects.

My acquaintance got accepted to the University of Nigeria (UNN) last year, but her admission was revoked since she lacked at least a credit pass in a scientific course.

As you can see, you must make sure you have the appropriate combination of O-level subjects for the course you want to do.

5) Absence of Knowledge

Last but not least, even if you have a very high post-UTME score, your chances of being admitted may be lost if you do not have the correct information.

Most colleges ask applicants to send in certain information by a certain date. Applicants who disobey the instructions risk having their admissions requests refused.
