Distance-Learning OAU Student Electrocuted Retrieving Football.

On Saturday evening in Moro, Osun State, an Obafemi Awolowo University Centre for Distance Learning (CDL) student was electrocuted while retrieving a football. Eyewitnesses said the anonymous student was playing football with buddies in a private dormitory on the Moro/Ife road when the ball flew over a fence into a nearby compound. He volunteer to retrieve it and threw it back to his peers. He was electrocuted when he hit a high-tension wire apparently brought down by a recent thunderstorm while climbing the fence to return.

The ball fell over the fence while he was playing football with others in his dormitory, according to a local resident who requested anonymity for safety.

He crossed across to collect it but accidently touched a high-tension wire on the way back. The wire was hanging since Friday following a severe storm.” When he didn’t move, his buddies used a stick to free him from the live wire and took him to a private hospital in Ipetumodu. Tragically, he died upon arrival.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, confirmed the tragedy and offered sympathies to the victim’s family. He called the student a promising young guy who wanted to attend a university after finishing his online learning program.
“It’s truly heartbreaking,” Olanrewaju remarked. “He was playing with friends when the ball dropped into another compound. The kicker has to retrieve the ball per their rule. He unintentionally grabbed a high-tension cable while returning. That interaction caused his tragic electrocution.”

Olanrewaju further noted that Professor Femi Koya, the CDL Director, has reached out to the student’s family to offer condolences and support.

The event increases concerns about off-campus student housing infrastructure and safety.
