With the official introduction of the 2024–2025 Ebonyi Scholarship Program by Governor Francis Nwifuru, 745 students will be able to pursue advanced degrees at colleges in Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
Governor Nwifuru highlighted the initiative’s emphasis on human capital development and called it a historic milestone for the state when he announced it on his official X account. “We proudly and joyfully launched our historic endeavour yesterday, sending 204 Ebonyians to the United Kingdom and 541 others to different Nigerian universities to pursue master’s and doctoral degrees,” he said.
Prioritising education over infrastructure, the governor emphasised the program as a calculated investment in the future of the state. “This celebration is an investment in our state’s future as well as in education. This is the largest infrastructure that can exist,” he continued.
Governor Nwifuru advised the scholarship recipients to make the most of their chance by immersing themselves in their studies, embracing different cultures, and establishing networks for both professional and personal development. Additionally, he reminded them of their duty to support the state’s progress after they returned.
“Here at home is where your ultimate mission lies. We anticipate that after you graduate, you will return to Ebonyi and apply your knowledge to fields that require your leadership, ingenuity, and inventiveness,” he stated.
In his newly announced 2025 state budget of ₦396.59 billion, Governor Nwifuru gave education the highest sectoral funding of ₦70.14 billion.
The administration has pledged to hire educators with expertise in entrepreneurial education and is concentrating on educational changes, especially in the fields of science and technology.
This program supports federal attempts to improve education, such as a $500 million World Bank loan to improve basic education and a proposed ₦3.5 trillion federal education budget.
The scholarship program is a reflection of Ebonyi State’s commitment to promoting industrialisation, economic independence, and higher living conditions by making calculated investments in human capital development and education.
