The winner of the 2025 Advanced Girls in Engineering, Mathematics, and Science (AGEMS) competition in Nigeria is Osamagbe Jegede, a Senior Secondary School (SSS III) student from Baptist High School in Benin, Edo State.
In appreciation of her achievement, Jegede received a medal for academic distinction, storage boxes, computers, instructional tablets, and an undisclosed monetary prize. In order to close the gender gap in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education for girls in the Niger Delta, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) organised the tournament.

The State Director of NDDC, Mrs. Mercy Babawale, emphasised the organization’s commitment to supporting female leadership in science and engineering via innovation and technology at a celebration in Benin. The AGEMS competition this year was a component of our festivities for International Women’s Day.
Babawale said, “Jegede represented Edo State at the event, which took place in Port Harcourt, and he emerged as the best in the entire Niger Delta.”
She clarified that there were three phases to the competition, starting with a Computer-Based Test (CBT) that involved ten Edo State schools that were chosen. Jegede qualified for the final round and won first place thanks to her exceptional performance.
Babawale underlined that Jegede’s accomplishment is evidence that, given the correct circumstances, young women can succeed in STEM fields. She added that in order to improve learning, the NDDC would construct solar panels at Baptist High School and give U-Lesson tablets to exceptional students.
She thanked the school’s administration, scientific instructors, and Jegede’s mother, Mrs. Abieyuwa Jegede, for helping to mould the young scholar’s academic path.
PTA Chairman Kunle Oladokun urged pupils to embrace science and technology, highlighting its importance in forming the future, while Prof. Joel Agbolagba, Chairman of the Baptist High School Governing Board, praised the NDDC’s efforts to promote STEM education for girls.
The 2025 International Women’s Day events included the AGEMS competition in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, which strengthened the Niger Delta’s dedication to developing young females in STEM.
