Enugu State Government Is Under Fire by Corps Member Over.

The Enugu State government has come under fire from a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member for giving them a meagre ₦892 each month. On X (previously Twitter), he vented his aggravation and questioned the justification for such a small honorarium.

“How can a state like Enugu be paying ₦892 as NYSC state allowance to corps members… is it for what?” he said in his post.

The post immediately became popular, and many people shared similar experiences:

  • @marvtridon: “I guess you are in a town. When I served there in 2017, those in the town were getting this while those of us in the villages were getting N3,800. This means for 8 years, nothing has changed.”
  • @Davidspredict: “I like as those set of Enugu PR team dey ignore this post, despite they got tagged. Nice one.”
  • @_Sassy_Angiel: “This is no news; over 60% of Nigerian states don’t pay a dime. However, it’s better not paying anything than paying such a meager sum.” • @am1_Val: “Used to be 10k before 2015, mhen. E pain me as I receive 3,900 abi 3,700 during gburugburu time.”
  • @_youfoundalex: “They are now paying close to 1k . When I served at the Ministry of Justice Enugu, we were not paid one Naira, yet them won use work finish us.”
  • @lol_stoned: “And I’m here complaining that Anambra is paying ₦8,100.”

Notably, the NYSC monthly allowance was approved by the Federal Government to rise from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000; payments are anticipated to start in February 2025. Reports, however, suggest that this rise has not yet been applied, which has left corps members still unhappy.

Furthermore, state allowances for corps members differ greatly throughout Nigeria. Enugu State, for example, is said to pay ₦3,800, whereas other governments give varying sums or, in certain situations, no extra allowance at all.

Corps members’ worries about their wellbeing during the service year have been exacerbated by the discrepancy between federal and state allowances as well as delays in putting the authorised federal increase into effect.
