FG Finds Recognized Togo and Benin Universities in Fake Degree Scandal
The Federal Government has stated that just eight colleges in Togo and Benin Republic are authorized to give degrees to Nigerian students to fight degree credential forgery.
During a Channels Television Sunday Politics interview, Education Minister Tahir Mamman said this. He said 22,500 Nigerians had false degrees from unaccredited colleges in these two nations, which would be annulled.
An undercover study revealed that Nigerian journalists could easily get false degrees, such as a degree from a Benin Republic institution in two months that secured a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) deployment.
The ministry listed Togo’s three authorized universities:
- Universite De Lome
- Universite De Kara Catholic
- University of West Africa
Benin Republic has five accredited universities:
University of Abomey-Calavi University of Parakou University of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics University of Agriculture University of Africa for Development Cooperation
Mamman said the federal government would not rescind its decision to revoke 22,700 credentials from “fake” colleges in Togo and Benin Republic. He said this is vital to defend Nigeria’s credibility since fake degrees damage it.
The Minister further observed that many people who gained these bogus credentials never went to the nations but instead obtained them fraudulently, frequently with the aid of corrupt authorities in Nigeria and abroad. He encouraged the federal government, especially the Head of Civil Service and Secretary to the Government, to identify and punish false certificate holders. He urged the business sector to follow suit.
