FG Lifts Ban, To Post Corps Members To Banks, Others

The federal government has lifted previous restrictions on National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) postings, allowing corps members to serve in banks, government agencies, and private sector organizations.

This change, detailed in a memo dated November 18, 2024, from the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, to the NYSC Director General, will take effect with the 2024 Batch ‘C’ Orientation Course.

Previously, NYSC postings were limited to four sectors: education, agriculture, health, and infrastructure.

This policy, introduced during the tenure of former Minister Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, aimed to prevent private organizations from exploiting corps members as cheap labor. However, it is now being revisited to address Nigeria’s rising unemployment rate.

Olawande explained that the updated policy aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of harmonizing government ministries, agencies, and parastatals with broader developmental goals.

He acknowledged that while the former policy was well-intentioned, it hindered corps members from gaining specialized training and experience in their fields, limiting their readiness for the job market.

To combat the unemployment crisis, Olawande directed the expansion of posting opportunities, including placements in private sector organizations, especially in banks and oil and gas companies. Initial postings will begin in Abuja and Lagos.
