First Series Results for CB-WASSCE 2024 Released: A New Era for WAEC Exams

The results of the 2024 First Series of the Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE) for Private Candidates represent a major turning point in the history of academic assessment on the West African continent. The release of these results, which demonstrate the smooth transition from the conventional Paper-Based Examinations (PBE) to the novel Computer-Based Examinations (CBE), has been announced with pride by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria. This change is a reflection of WAEC’s dedication to quality and contemporary service delivery, as well as of international best practices.

A Hybrid Examination Approach

Using a combination of multiple-choice and essay questions, the first CB-WASSCE used a hybrid approach to assess applicants thoroughly. This method allowed students to submit their answers to multiple-choice questions in real-time using computers, while essay and practical exam solutions were submitted in conventional booklets. Held from January 31 to February 17, 2024, this innovative test is a step toward adopting technology-enhanced teaching and learning strategies.

Engagement and Performance Perspectives

In 140 computer-based testing centers around the country, 8,139 candidates took the exam; this was a small decline in applications from the year before. Examination fairness and inclusivity were guaranteed as 21 candidates with special needs, including candidates who were albinos, visually impaired, or hearing impaired, were accommodated.

After conducting a thorough analysis, it was found that 42.07% of candidates had at least five subjects with credits earned, and 30.95% of candidates had credits in five subjects, including mathematics and English language. As evidenced by the slight improvement in performance, this highlights the possibility for CBE to improve test results.

Decreased Examinee Misconducts

Examinee malpractice has significantly decreased with the switch to CBE; just 0.80% of candidates’ results were withheld for relevant offenses, a marked drop from the previous year. This encouraging pattern demonstrates how well CBE maintains fairness and integrity throughout the testing procedure.

Digital Certificates and Result Accessibility

Through www.waecdirect.org, candidates may easily view their results, and through www.waec.org, they can get digital copies of their certificates. To further improve applicants’ convenience and accessibility, the WAEC Certificate Request Portal (e-Certman) now provides an online service for printing physical copies of certificates.

Gratitude and Upcoming Projects

WAEC would like to express its appreciation to all of the stakeholders who helped make the CB-WASSCE a success, including governmental organizations, security services, academic institutions, and ad hoc staff. This cooperative endeavor highlights the shared dedication to improving educational results and standards for candidates throughout West Africa.

It is clear from looking back at the accomplishments of the CB-WASSCE for Private Candidates, 2024-First Series, that the introduction of computer-based exams marks the beginning of a new age in academic evaluation that is efficient, honest, and inclusive. This initiative’s effective execution presents bright possibilities for the next tests, in line with international trends and the changing requirements of both instructors and students. We extend our congratulations to all of the selected candidates and wish you great success in your academic and career endeavors.
