FUTA First-Class Graduate, Shares the Keys to Academic Success.

25-year-old Omowunmi Fatoki, a first-class Industrial Chemistry graduate from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has talked about the commitment, self-control, and attitude that made her the top student in her department and the top female graduate in her faculty.

Fatoki was admitted in 2018, returned in 2019, and received his degree in 2024. She had originally intended to study medicine or pharmacy, but after three failed tries and difficulties with biology, she decided to switch her attention to industrial chemistry after realising how strong it was and how many future options it offered.

She set out to earn a first-class degree right away. She maintained her resolve despite having a first-semester GPA of 4.45, which was just below the first-class cutoff. The largest obstacle was a challenging general course in her third year, which caused her to achieve her lowest GPA of 4.36. She persisted, nevertheless, and got better in the semesters that followed.

Rather than cramming before tests, Fatoki took a methodical approach to studying, going over the subject regularly from the beginning of each semester. She stayed away from distractions, abstained from clubbing and pointless social events, and surrounded herself with peers who shared her interests and contributed to her academic path.

Her lowest point occurred during her first semester at the 400-level, when she felt confident in a course and expected a 5.0 GPA, but instead received a “C.” The mistake was not fixed even when she followed up with her lecturer and appealed the grade. She was disappointed, but she was determined to keep going.

Despite her demanding academic schedule, she actively participated in fellowship activities, volunteered for community initiatives, and took on private tutoring jobs to help support herself financially. She was able to balance her obligations and get six hours of sleep every day by effectively managing her time.
Fatoki attributes her accomplishment to the steadfast assistance of her mother, siblings, and an uncle-recommended mentor. She was able to obtain a female-focused scholarship thanks to the mentor. She also thanks her academic and religious mentors for their support and direction.

She intends to apply for scholarships and pursue a PhD in order to continue her education. She views earning her first-class degree as a springboard to more success in both her academic and professional endeavours.

Fatoki advises students to maintain their commitment to their academic objectives, recognise their abilities, and stay focused. She counsels them to set aside more time for difficult subjects, surround themselves with positive influencers, and manage their time well.

Her inspirational story is proof of the strength of perseverance, hard effort, and academic discipline.
