After finding pupils excavating a bathroom pipeline during an impromptu visit to the School for Arabic Studies in Kano, Abba Kabir Yusuf, the governor of Kano State, outlawed the use of students for manual labour in schools.
The governor strongly disapproved of the practice in a statement released on Sunday by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, who insisted that schools should prioritise moral instruction and education over manual labour. Yusuf insisted that such chores were undesirable, even after the headmaster clarified that the job was done after school hours.

He ordered that the Ministry of Education or his office be in charge of all school infrastructure and maintenance projects to ensure proper implementation. He also guaranteed the school administration that his administration will restore the institution’s mosque and other deteriorating buildings.
