Due to a serious medical issue, physicians at birth projected that Nekhidia Harris would not live past three days. She overcame these harsh expectations and went on to accomplish what many believed was unachievable: graduating with honours from Medgar Evers College in the United States with a bachelor’s degree in social work.
Numerous surgeries and frequent bone fractures were among the many difficulties Harris faced in his early years. But instead of allowing her illness to define her, she embraced tenacity and willpower, challenging herself academically and demonstrating the boundless potential she possessed.

There were challenges along the way to her graduation. Her determination was put to the test by long study sessions, restless nights, and moments of self-doubt, but walking across the graduation platform became a sign of victory—one she had battled for her entire life. On her graduation day, she reflected, “Those were tears of joy, celebrating all the hard work that led me to this moment.”
Harris, who is currently 29 years old, is continuing her education at York College in Queens by working towards a master’s degree in social work. She is passionate about working with children and hopes to use her training and life experiences to change people’s lives in a meaningful way.
“Use my brain as my height” is a concept her father taught her, and it has given Harris strength throughout her quest. She has turned her hardships into motivation, demonstrating that willpower, tenacity, and faith in oneself can overcome even the most formidable challenges.
