After facing homelessness and rejection, 21-year-old Renell Harding won a scholarship to a UK law school.
Brent native Renell became homeless at 13 owing to familial troubles. Having an abusive upbringing, he suffered greatly. He said, “My earliest memories are of my dad abusing my mum – it was rarely peaceful at home. Renell handled autism problems discreetly despite her early diagnosis.
Renell hid his homelessness from high school professors and friends. He persevered and got into Swansea University. “I couldn’t tell anyone. It was difficult; we had to move, he remarked.
Renell earned a Second Class Upper degree in History from Swansea University despite his circumstances. His vacation competitive law internships showed his dedication to his future.
After earning his bachelor’s degree, Renell wanted to practice law. His scholarship and hardship fund applications were repeatedly denied. Still determined, he crowdfunded £11,175 in 28 days, falling £7,000 short. After reading his crowdfunding website, the University of Law awarded him a partial scholarship just before he gave up.
“A woman called to say the student finance team loved my fundraising page. They offered me a scholarship. I was thrilled since I gave it my best and felt appreciated, Renell said.
The scholarship allowed him to study for a Graduate Diploma in Law at the University of Law in England. I never thought this would happen while I was homeless. At that point, I understood I had to give my schooling my all to succeed, he added.
Renell’s perseverance is inspiring.
