Senegalese geological engineer Mouhamadou Bamba Samb surmounted several obstacles to be awarded the esteemed Chevening Scholarship for the University of Exeter’s MSc in Mining Environmental Management. He had a strong interest in sustainable mining and was committed to addressing the harm that mineral extraction in Africa was causing to the environment. Although obtaining the fully financed scholarship was not an easy trip, his perseverance, forethought, and commitment to his objectives eventually paid off.
Mouhamadou, who graduated with a degree in Geological Engineering from Senegal’s National School of Mines and Geology/Earth Science Institute, was aware of the damaging environmental impacts of mining, particularly Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM). He wanted to learn more about mining environmental management since he was driven to bring about change. Although he obtained unconditional offers from all three of the UK universities he applied to—Exeter, Leeds, and Cardiff—funding was still a problem. At that point, he began to aim for the prestigious Chevening Scholarship.
After learning about Chevening from a former student named Fatoumata Zahra Diallo, Mouhamadou applied with great anticipation. He was conditionally selected on his first try but was not given the chance because he was unable to submit the results of his English proficiency test in time. Unfazed, he studied harder, took the IELTS early, and received a 7.0. He also revised his essays after receiving criticism from a scholar. His perseverance paid off when he received the scholarship on his second try, guaranteeing him complete financial support for his education.
His well-defined professional objectives, organised leadership and networking essays, and impressive interview performance were some of the main elements that set his application apart. In his application, he also placed a strong emphasis on authenticity, making sure that his objectives and stories were told in an engaging and sincere way.
