The girls from St. John Vianney Science College in Igbariam, Anambra State, won the National Girls in ICT Competition 2024 on Wednesday, taking home the national championship title thanks to their virtual reality project.

The Federal Ministry of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy is hosting the National Girls in ICT Competition, a technological innovation competition open to all female secondary school students in Nigeria.

Users can discover the fascinating cultural facets of Nigerian tribes and tour famous places like Zuma Rock with the revolutionary M-Tag VR project from the college.

Under the guidance of their coach, John Onuigbo, the girls—Immaculate Ikegwuonu, Camilla Anyadike, and Nweke-Nonso Oluchi—overcame teams from all 36 states in the federation.

The girls competed first at the state level, winning the Anambra State competition. They then went on to win the South-Eastern regional championship, overcoming teams from the states of Enugu, Ebonyi, Imo, and Abia to go to the national finals.

The organizers claimed that the judges were consistently astonished by their extraordinary projects and abilities, which led to an exhilarating national win over formidable competitors from the nation’s six geopolitical zones.

States of Rivers and Lagos took second and third place, respectively.

Immaculate Ikegwuonu, one of the girls, spoke on Thursday and showed her delight by stating, “We are extremely happy about this opportunity! We are grateful for our school, which inspires us to seek IT-related employment. We hope that this victory will encourage other girls to follow suit.

The St. John Vianney Science College’s director, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Obimma, expressed his happiness at the victory by saying, “This national championship is a monumental achievement for our school and a source of immense pride.” It demonstrates our dedication to encouraging young women to pursue careers in STEM.

Being a science institution, we are aware of the effects of technology and provide our students with the tools they need to utilize it responsibly. Therefore, this victory is not shocking. It is the outcome of years and years of labor.

“These young girls’ talent and perseverance are demonstrated by their triumph. Being a part of their journey makes us happy. They have demonstrated not only their technical proficiency but also their inventiveness and problem-solving abilities.

The National Girls in ICT Competition is made possible, according to Idika Ukpai, the Operations Lead for Kodex Africa, by the establishment of hubs in each state that offer logistical support and guarantee a seamless competition process. This Anambra State team received sponsorship from Kodex Africa.
