Inspirational Journey from Waiter to First-Class Graduate

Obed Asamoah Boateng, a young Ghanaian man, has shown that perseverance and dedication can overcome even the most difficult obstacles by defying all chances and earning a first-class degree in philosophy and political science from the University of Ghana. Obed had a very difficult academic career.

Financial issues nearly dashed his hopes of continuing his education, even though he performed exceptionally well on his West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), with 5As, 2Bs, and a C.

He struggled to make ends meet after high school, so he worked as a mobile money agent to save money. He relocated to Accra in pursuit of better prospects after being encouraged by a buddy. Despite working long hours and night shifts at a biscuit manufacturing company, he never lost sight of his ultimate goal: going to college.

Obed bought the University of Ghana entrance forms in 2020, and the following year he was accepted. Financial difficulties, however, continued. His parents provided some early assistance, but not enough. He worked as a waitress at an East Legon restaurant, sold tissue paper, and helped out at his father’s mechanic shop since he was determined to pay for his schooling.

Even though life was difficult, I had to make plans for the future. He remembered that giving up was not an option.

It was tough to juggle several jobs and school, but Obed stayed focused. He also worked as a server at banquets and an usher at events to supplement his income. But by his third year, he had come to the realisation that working too many jobs was hurting his academic performance. He left his job as a waitress to focus on his studies, and he began hawking bread in his hostel before classes.

Obed was the vice president of his department and was heavily involved in student politics and extracurricular activities despite his financial difficulties. His unwavering perseverance and diligence eventually paid off, as he received a first-class degree upon graduation.

As he reflected on his path, Obed said his success was a result of his faith, tenacity, and fortitude.

“There were days I felt like giving up, nights I cried, and moments I doubted myself. But every struggle, every sacrifice, and every step was worth it,” he said.

To those facing challenges, he offered his encouragement:

Your dreams are valid. Your efforts will pay off. The struggles won’t last forever, but the victory will. Stay focused, stay resilient, and trust the process.”

Obed is dedicated to lifelong learning, development, and leaving a lasting impression as he goes forward. Many people who are trying to succeed in spite of all obstacles can find encouragement in his narrative.
