In a significant move to enhance the quality of education and effective management within Kano State’s higher education sector, the Kano State Executive Council approved the conversion of Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education to Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kumbotso, during its 18th sitting on September 18, 2024. The institution will continue to award degrees.
This decision follows extensive consultations with key stakeholders and a recommendation from a high-powered committee appointed by the State Government to evaluate the university’s status and explore ways to improve its academic quality.
The committee’s findings revealed concerns from both the academic and non-academic communities regarding potential negative impacts of transitioning to university status. Notably, the college serves various students from non-metropolitan areas due to its strategic location and accessibility.
Concerns included risks of losing experienced lecturers, salary-related conflicts, and administrative challenges that could compromise the institution’s operational efficiency. The Council acknowledged that similar institutions across the country operate successfully as colleges of education while offering a range of degree programs under the “Dual Mode” framework established by the NCE regulatory body.
The conversion is expected to have no adverse effects on current students, who will continue their studies without interruption. The university’s certificate will remain secure for future use, and the institution will maintain its traditional courses while expanding to include additional degree programs.
Following this development, His Excellency, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Executive Governor of Kano State, approved the immediate dissolution of the university management and directed the Vice Chancellor to hand over affairs to the most senior Deputy, pending further announcements.
This strategic decision reflects the Kano State Government’s commitment to ensuring stability and growth in its higher education institutions while addressing stakeholder concerns to uphold academic excellence and operational efficiency.
