Lab Assistant duties and responsibilities
- Lab assistants perform laboratory tests.
- They prepare samples/specimens.
- They perform daily quality control checks.
- They prepare reports from experiments.
- They interpret results from findings.
- They adhere to standard procedures and policies and enforces same on laboratory users.
- They document all activities.
- They liaise with appropriate cleaning and maintenance section of the company for regular maintenance of the lab.
- Maintain orderliness and supplies.
- Help with administrative tasks when needed.

- Years of experience as a Lab Assistant
- BS.C degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Science Laboratory Technology or relevant field.

- Strong analytical and critical skills
- Fluent communication skills
- Ability to maintain focus, work under pressure and for long hours.

Lab Assistant salary and Health Benefits
In Nigeria, laboratory assistants are not well paid. Private companies pay ranges from #25,000 – #50,000 except for a very few whilst public institutions may do a bit better of up to #70,000.
In America and Europe, Laboratory assistants are paid up to 40,000 per annum.
Promotion for laboratory assistants in Nigeria is very slow and comes with insignificant pay increase except of course with an addition of degrees.
More so, unlike the western world, lab assistants in Nigeria receive little or no health benefit or hazard allowances. They may get sick often due to toxic inhalation, and contact with harmful substances. They often bear the full cost of recovery.
Conclusion
Working as a laboratory assistant is interesting but quite challenging.
