LASU’s Best Graduating Law Student Wins 5 Convocation Prizes.

At the 28th Convocation Ceremony at Lagos State University (LASU), Boluwatifẹ Emmanuel Kolawole was named the Best Graduating Student in the Faculty of Law, demonstrating fortitude, resilience, and academic excellence. He won five convocation honours, demonstrating his academic excellence and drive.

Kolawole’s journey is unusual. Persistence led him from mowing lawns and working in block industries in high school to working as a cashier and food attendant after graduation. He taught at secondary schools, gave tutorials, and hosted events to support himself while in university.

His academic journey was difficult. The first-year student survived a mosquito coil-caused dormitory fire that burned practically everything he possessed save his certificates. Later, a nocturnal storm ripped off his hostel roof, ruining his things. He also battled ocular migraines and the emotional toll of a broken home.

Despite these challenges, Kolawole audited 72 courses over five years and earned 58 A’s, 9 B’s, 4 C’s, and 1 D. He was named Best Graduating Student (BGS) of Law at the convocation for his outstanding achievement.

Kolawole was a true leader with 16 undergraduate leadership titles. He was LASU Debate Society President, LAWSAN Southwest Zonal Director, LASU Students’ Union Court of Appeal President, and Lincoln’s Inn Student Chamber Deputy Head of Inn.

Kolawole excels outside the classroom. He won 23 prizes, including:

  • 2023 CITN-ANTAS National Tax Debate Winner
  • NGA 6 (Legal Committee) Best Delegate, Covenant International Model UN
  • Nigeria’s first National Tax Moot winner and best counsel
  • Best Debater, Ambrose Alli University Sylvia Ogwemoh National Moot & Mock
  • Four times Vice Chancellor’s Leadership and Academics Letter of Commendation recipient

Olaniwun Ajayi, G. Elias, Babalakin & Co, and the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project were among his Nigerian legal internships. In an emotional reflection, Kolawole thanked his faith, family, mentors, and friends for their steadfast support.

“I am confident God did this!” he said, pledging to persevere and be grateful for fresh opportunities.

“I cannot celebrate now,” Kolawole says, despite the huge success. I just started.” A declaration that shows his humility and promises a bright future.
