Esomnofu Chidiebube Ifechukwu, a dedicated teacher at Crown Grace School in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, has made history by winning the prestigious 2024 Maltina Teacher of the Year (MToY) Award.

This marks the first time a teacher from Nasarawa State has claimed this top honor since the competition’s inception a decade ago.

Ifechukwu emerged as the winner from a pool of 1,476 participants nationwide, demonstrating his exceptional teaching skills and dedication to education.

As the winner, Ifechukwu will receive ₦10 million in cash, a gold trophy, and an all-expenses-paid short course abroad.

Additionally, his school will benefit from a ₦20 million development project, which could include the construction of a block of classrooms or a laboratory.

This year’s MToY competition, celebrating its 10th anniversary, featured enhanced prizes.

The first runner-up, Kehinde Oladapo Olukayode from Ogun State, was awarded ₦3 million, while the second runner-up, Aniefiok Iniobong Udoh from Akwa Ibom State, received ₦2.5 million.

For the first time, all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory had winners, with each state champion receiving ₦1 million.

The grand finale, held at Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos, saw the attendance of prominent figures, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu (represented by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun), Minister of State for Education Dr. Yusuf Sununu (represented by Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, Rector of Yaba College of Technology), and renowned economist Prof. Patrick Utomi, who chaired the panel of judges.
