The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of non-teaching university staff unions, which includes the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), has announced an indefinite nationwide strike beginning at midnight on Sunday, October 27, 2024.
The strike comes in response to the government’s non-payment of four months’ withheld salaries, affecting members across universities and inter-university centers.
A circular titled “Latest Development Regarding the Withheld Four (4) Months’ Salaries,” addressed to NASU and SSANU branch chairmen, outlines the grievances and timeline leading to the strike.
Despite President Bola Tinubu’s recent approval of a partial payment of 50% of the withheld wages, union leaders have criticized the Ministry of Finance for ongoing delays, arguing that these delays cast doubt on the government’s commitment to resolving the issue.
NASU initially scheduled the strike for October 23 but postponed it to allow for a NASU Trade Group Council meeting at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria on October 23-24, 2024.
This adjustment aims to ensure unified action and coordination between NASU and SSANU.
The unions made this adjustment to ensure unified action and proper coordination between NASU and SSANU.
NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi and SSANU President Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, who signed the circular, thanked union members for their support and pledged to persist until the withheld salaries are fully paid
