New Re-admission Procedure for MOUAU Incorporates N25,000 Reparation

Following a violent rally, the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) has required its students to pay a N25,000 compensation fee in order to be readmitted. Millions of naira worth of university property was destroyed as a result of the protest on February 6, 2024. Academic pursuits were consequently put on hold, and an inquiry panel was set up to determine the full scope of the harm.

The University Administration’s Measures

Vice-Chancellor Professor Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe stated that following a thorough inquiry, the committee’s conclusions were carefully examined and then forwarded to the Federal Government for additional action. The government issued the final report on May 3, 2024, allowing the university to resume classes on May 19, 2024, provided that each student pays the readmission reparation price.

The Vice-Chancellor emphasized that after carefully reviewing the report, the government particularly ordered an early start to operations. “The government released the report on May 3rd and directed that the reopening of the institution should begin,” he said.

Requirements for Students Returning

Before they can resume their studies, returning students need to meet a few requirements in addition to paying the N25,000 cost. Among them are:

  • Written Undertaking: Before May 19th, each student must give a written undertaking that has been approved by a high court through an affidavit and turned in to the department head in charge of that department. Upon arrival, students must also present a paper copy of this letter.
  • Course Registration: As many had not done so before the protest, students need to register for their courses as soon as possible.
  • Oath of Good Behavior: The undertaking letter must guarantee that students will uphold the oath they took upon matriculation and not violate it. It needs to be attested to and signed by a high court.
  • Unpaid Fees: Students who owe money for university fees for the 2023–2024 academic year must pay it all in full; partial payments are not accepted.

In Summary

The Vice-Chancellor expressed confidence in a seamless return to academic normalcy with these precautions in place. These actions are intended to guarantee that MOUAU maintains a safe learning environment, that the campus stays organized, and that students are adequately ready for their return.
