Yusuf Abednego, a gifted Nigerian student, became the first student to earn a First-Class degree in more than ten years at the University of Maiduguri’s (UNIMAID) Department of Political Science.
Despite a lot of academic difficulties and administrative irregularities during his studies, Yusuf was the only one in his graduating class of 192 to receive this honour.
When his GPA was misrecorded in his first year, he started to suffer, and this continued, making his path to First-Class even more challenging. Furthermore, there were rumours that no student had received First-Class in the department in a decade, with others speculating that grading discrepancies were caused by non-academic causes.

Yusuf persevered in spite of these obstacles, juggling leadership positions in several student organisations with his studies. He persisted in aiming for excellence even after his grades declined as a result of some lecturers’ grading practices.
Yusuf was the best student in his department by his last year, but he almost lost his First-Class because of a mistake in his records. He showed proof to the Head of Department after learning that a course in which he had received an A was in fact recorded as a C, and the Head verified the error. Following the adjustment, Yusuf formally received his First-Class, which was a landmark accomplishment for the Political Science department at UNIMAID.
As he looked back on his path, Yusuf was thankful for his tenacity, demonstrating that hard work and determination can get you past even the most difficult academic challenges.
