Nigerian Celebrates Graduation as the Department only Student.

After disclosing that she was the only student in her department during her time at university and that she is now graduating alone, a Nigerian woman has gained attention on the internet.

The graduate, known on TikTok as Edit By Rhema, attended Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science, and Technology (BOUESTI) in Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State, to study Industrial Mathematics. Edit expressed her joy at finishing her degree as the sole student in her class in a celebratory video that she uploaded to her TikTok website.

She captioned the video, dancing happily while wearing her graduation outfit:

“You are convocating on Saturday after being the only person in your department.”

Many others expressed surprise at the uncommon experience of being the only student in a department after hearing her story, which immediately acquired popularity. The comment section was full of jokes, with some people speculating that she must have served as both the department president and the spokesperson for her own class.

Being the lone student in a class has special difficulties, especially when it comes to academic dynamics and social connection. According to research on the consequences of small class sizes by Bondebjerg et al., having fewer peers may reduce opportunities for social growth and peer learning.

According to their research,

The potential for beneficial peer effects on students’ academic learning and socioemotional development (e.g., learning from peers with more advanced academic skills) may be limited by small class numbers, which may result in less variance in academic and social skills within the class.

But the researchers also noted that in other situations, including special education, where pupils could get more specialised care and attention, small classes can be advantageous.

Edit By Rhema made the most of her special university experience in spite of any potential social obstacles. Her graduation on her own is a noteworthy accomplishment that demonstrates her tenacity and love for learning.
