Nigerian inventor leaves University to build electric cars.

By creating and producing electric vehicles (EVs) from the ground up, 31-year-old Nigerian entrepreneur Mustapha Abubakar Gajibo, who left the University of Maiduguri in his fourth year of studying mechanical engineering, has made incredible advancements in EV innovation.

Mustapha is the managing director of Phoenix Renewables Limited, a startup company situated in Northern Nigeria that specialises in transforming gasoline-powered cars into solar-powered electric vehicles by utilising rechargeable batteries that are acquired locally. He decided to drop out of college because he wanted to focus entirely on using sustainable transportation to address environmental issues.

Mustapha concentrated on producing locally made electric tricycles in order to create jobs and lessen the outflow of foreign cash, driven by the economic impact of mass-imported tricycles in Nigeria. Following three years of development, he was able to create fifty electric tricycles, each with a 200-kilometer range between charges, which are currently being used commercially in Maiduguri. His company, which was before reliant on imported materials, now manufactures vehicle chassis locally while including solar panels and high-capacity batteries for additional charging.

In addition to having contemporary conveniences like air conditioning, radios, and traffic indicators, the EVs’ zero-emission design lowers operating expenses and noise pollution as compared to gasoline-powered cars. Beyond his local achievements, Mustapha hopes his invention will find a home in international markets, where he hopes to compete with companies such as Tesla.

“We would like our cars to be driven in major cities like New York, London, Munich, and others around the world,” he stated.
