Without a master’s degree, Abdullahi Aborode, a determined young man from Nigeria, made news by obtaining two fully financed PhD scholarships at a prominent US university. Despite major obstacles, Abdullahi never gave up on his goal of achieving global academic success. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and a second-class lower classification from the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN). Despite obstacles, he persevered because of his tenacity and passion for his studies.

Abdullahi applied to multiple graduate programs nonstop for four difficult years, negotiating a field full of fierce competition and rejections. Despite obstacles, he never wavered in his commitment to bettering himself, focussing on developing his leadership, research writing, and laboratory techniques. He also made the effort to become certified in the GRE, Duolingo, and TOEFL, which strengthened his applications and increased his academic opportunities.
Abdullahi actively participated in conferences throughout this trip in order to expand his network and expertise within the scientific community. When he received the life-altering news of receiving two fully financed PhD offers in 2022, his perseverance paid off. Thinking back on his experiences, he characterised the trip as one of tenacity, diligence, and unshakeable faith, emphasising the value of tenacity in realising his goals.
Abdullahi is now prepared to start his doctoral studies at Mississippi State University’s Department of Chemistry, where his work will focus on the intersection of science and medicine. He intends to look at the function of the intracellular calcium-sensing protein “Calmodulin” in identifying variations in calcium concentration, which is essential for creating treatments for heart disease. Abdullahi is thrilled for this new phase of his academic journey and thankful for the support of his friends, family, mentors, and recommenders.
