A young Nigerian student named Godwin Smart overcame major financial and personal obstacles to obtain his Master’s degree in Physics from North Carolina University.
He was unable to pay for a plane ticket to the United States even though he had obtained a fully financed scholarship. He used social media to obtain support since he was determined to follow his aspirations, and kind Nigerians banded together to help pay for his trip.

His mother’s death from cancer prior to his departure added to the emotional toll. His grades suffered as a result of his inability to adapt, and he lost his scholarship. But Dr. Markoff, his academic advisor, intervened and helped him regain his confidence and scholarship.
He later won prominent honours like the APS Cash Prize Award and the NSBP Best Poster Award. Godwin credits his late mother, who made many sacrifices for his schooling, with helping him succeed. His tale is a stirring illustration of fortitude, camaraderie, and faith.
