Nigerian University Fires Vice-Chancellor

The Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State, fired Professor Joseph Ikechebelu as Acting Vice-Chancellor.

Early June saw the appointment of Mr. Ikechebelu to replace Professor Charles Esimone, who resigned on 3 June.

On Saturday, Gregory Mbadiwe, Pro-Chancellor and Council Chair, informed media of the firing in a letter.

Mr. Ikechebelu was fired without explanation.

The letter named Professor Carol Arinze-Umobi as interim vice-chancellor starting Monday, 22 July 2024.

Section Four of the First Schedule of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Act CAP 139, LFN 2004, as modified by the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (modified) Act 2007, governs her six-month appointment.

The letter to Mrs. Arinze-Umobi read, “The terms and conditions of your appointment are as approved by the federal government for all federal universities.”
