Nigerian woman breaks 36-year record at UNIUYO.

An exceptional Nigerian woman named Ikanna Okim made history at the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) by being the first student to earn a first-class Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree in 36 years.

Ikanna’s outstanding academic performance in 2020, followed by her sustained success at the Nigerian Law School, was the catalyst for this outstanding accomplishment.

She continued her stellar performance at law school, earning first-class honours and becoming qualified as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

Looking back on her academic career, Ikanna credits her early intellectual stimulation and upbringing with her accomplishment. “I was raised in a fantastic environment. “I always tell people that I had a purpose growing up,” she said.

“My parents pushed us to think critically and independently and to push our minds.” My dad, a successful writer and journalist, and I frequently read newspapers and talked about them. This stoked our interest and improved our comprehension of difficult subjects.

Ikanna went into further detail. Ikanna also highlighted her ability to multitask, which allowed her to succeed academically while balancing leadership responsibilities, extracurricular activities, and academics. Because I’m good at multitasking, I didn’t have to make many concessions. I took involved in a number of extracurricular activities and school politics. Sleep was the only thing I occasionally had to give up,” she said.

Her commitment to excellence has now earned her a full scholarship to the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, where she is currently enrolled as an Oxford-Hackney BCL Graduate Scholar pursuing a Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) degree.

The esteemed Oxford BCL is a postgraduate legal degree that is on par with other universities’ Master of Laws (LLM).

Ikanna plans to further her knowledge in the field by pursuing a PhD in Corporate and Commercial Law after earning her master’s degree.
