Nursing student arrested for attempted smuggle of cocaine

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has detained a 26-year-old nursing student from Noida International University in India for allegedly planning to eat 76 wraps of cocaine in an attempt to smuggle them.


According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, the suspect was apprehended Thursday night at the Royal Park Hotel in Sabon Gari, Kano, hours before her scheduled trip to Delhi, India, on Qatar Airways. She was waiting for the cocaine consignment she was supposed to consume before boarding her trip.


The arrest was made earlier that day when NDLEA agents arrested a 31-year-old male accomplice while on patrol along the Okene-Lokoja route in Kogi State. The man, who was travelling from Lagos to Kano by commuter bus, was discovered carrying an audio speaker containing 76 cocaine pellets weighing 1.34 kilogrammes.

Following his confession, NDLEA operatives carried out a follow-up operation, resulting in the nursing student’s arrest in Kano.


The suspect claimed to being recruited by an Indian narcotics cartel, which sponsored her journey to Nigeria during the Christmas and New Year holidays. To escape detection, she avoided her native state of Imo and spent two weeks in a motel in Enugu before travelling to Kano via Abuja. She was given $5,000 (about. ₦9 million) for successfully delivering the cocaine to India.


The NDLEA has detained the defendant and her accomplice for prosecution.
