After the federal government recently increased their monthly budget from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000, two National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members went viral by enthusiastically buying live chickens and yam tubers.

The corps members were shown merrily strolling around a local market, proudly showcasing their goods, in a video posted on TikTok by @thankie88. They enthusiastically talked about cooking as they headed home, and an eyewitness could be heard applauding them.
Since then, social media users have responded to the video in a variety of ways, with some praising their enthusiasm and others criticising their purchasing decisions.
Here are a few responses:
- @Zekiel: “That chicken and yam alone have already consumed half of the money.”
- @YAHWEH’S DELIGHT: “Omo, the allowance is almost gone—chicken for ₦12K or ₦10K, yam for ₦4K or ₦5K.”
- @Maximus-Pedro: “We were the last batch of corps members to receive ₦9,500 in 2010.”
- @akintoyeakinwale3: “This is why the world doesn’t take us seriously… so buying chicken is their priority? The government knows how to handle Nigerians.”
- @Elizabeth of Barcelona: “Some people don’t plan at all. Once NYSC ends, it will feel like they lost a job.”
