The community of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, is in grief over the unexpected passing of renowned scholar Professor Jimoh Olanipekun, who passed away during a departmental meeting and was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Staff, students, and colleagues are in shock over the sudden loss because the late professor was praised for his outstanding achievements to the university and his commitment to academia.
Abiodun Olarewaju, the university’s public relations officer, said in a statement that Professor Olanipekun started having serious breathing problems during the meeting. His coworkers promptly hurried him to the university’s Health and Medical Centre after realising the urgency. He was sent to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC) for additional care following an initial assessment, but regrettably, he was declared dead when they got there.

OAU Vice-Chancellor Professor Adebayo Bamire led a delegation of the university’s administration to visit the family after learning of his passing. He said he was deeply saddened by the passing of such a renowned scholar and called the event both painful and upsetting. Professor Bamire acknowledged Olanipekun’s enduring contribution to philosophy and his beneficial influence on the university, and urged the family to take solace in the meaningful life he led.
At the condolence visit, Bamire said, “We still find it hard to believe that such a bright mind could leave us so abruptly while performing his duties.” “The Lord gives and the Lord takes away according to His will,” he added, reminding the family to find strength in their faith.
Many people held Professor Jimoh Olanipekun in high regard for his scholarship, mentoring, and commitment to teaching. As tributes from students, coworkers, and academic associates who are mourning the loss of a real scholar and leader continue to stream in, his demise has left a pall over the campus.
