In response to student concerns about irregular academic schedules that they feel negatively impact their welfare and well-being, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has banned professors from arranging classes between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
The management of the university has reaffirmed that the official lecture hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. It has also issued warnings against violations, such as scheduling classes during Lecture Free Week.
The Vice-Chancellor underlined the importance of keeping this time free from lectures and continuing evaluations in a statement made by Registrar K. A. Bakare.
The statement said, “The Vice-Chancellor appreciates the cooperation of both staff and students on these matters.” The students’ complaints about various academic scheduling procedures are reflected in this directive. The Great Ife Students’ Union had denounced the introduction of lessons at 7:00 a.m., disruptions to the Lecture Free Week, and classes that continued past 6:00 p.m., including Saturday classes.
“The university community must be reminded that these practices are not acceptable at OAU, and it is depressing to see such anomalies becoming commonplace,” the union said. Students urged the administration to act quickly, stating that these anomalies impair their overall wellbeing and academic balance.
“Scheduling lectures during Lecture Free Week undermines its purpose, denying students the chance to reinforce their learning, and such disruptions compromise the equilibrium between academic responsibilities and other vital aspects of students’ lives,” they claimed.
The Division of Student Affairs and the university administration have been urged by the Students’ Union to take immediate action to resolve these issues. The union cautioned that if these rules are not followed, more measures may be taken. “We urge the university and the Division of Student Affairs to swiftly tackle these issues,” the union said.
“The Great Ife Students’ Union is dedicated to promoting laws that put every student’s welfare and academic achievement first. If normalcy is not restored, we will not be afraid to act decisively going forward to protect our members’ rights and interests,” they continued.
Additionally, students have been urged to report infractions, especially through their class reps.
