Miss Dauda Aishat Anuoluwapo, the top graduating student from Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) for the 2023–2024 academic year, has received N3 million from Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun. In addition, 14 more exceptional students from different faculties were recognised for their academic prowess with N500,000 apiece.
Governor Abiodun underlined his goal of making Ogun State a centre for academic innovation and quality in addition to serving as Nigeria’s capital of education. He announced this at the 34th convocation event of the institution, which included prize presentations, the awarding of higher degrees and diplomas, and the conferment of honorary degrees.
The governor, accompanied by his deputy, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, emphasised the commitment of his administration to improving education by means of a number of capacity-building programs and regulations meant to guarantee access to high-quality education.
He underlined his government’s commitment to giving the institution cutting-edge technical resources to promote research, teaching, and learning, and he pointed out that OOU is essential to national growth, especially in capacity building and research. “I want to reassure you that our administration is still totally dedicated to OOU’s ongoing growth.
This entails building cutting-edge labs, contemporary lecture rooms, dorms for students, and recreational spaces. In order to give students the skills they need to compete in a world that is becoming more interconnected by the day, we are also growing our e-learning infrastructure and digital resources,” Abiodun said. The governor also recognised the contribution made by the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which was established as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, to the assistance of students attending postsecondary educational institutions.
He commended the Tertiary Education Trust Fund’s (TETFUND) several actions aimed at reorienting Ogun’s postsecondary institutions. He also emphasised the creation of the Ogun State Education Trust Fund in 2020, which was intended to assist with the building of infrastructure in state-owned postsecondary institutions that were not covered by the TETFUND. Now, plans are in motion to expand this program to elementary and secondary schools, reaffirming the government’s dedication to offering high-quality, easily accessible education at all levels.
Governor Abiodun emphasised that educational development is a shared duty and urged citizens, businesses, and the private sector to work with the government to advance education in Ogun State.
He also congratulated Dr. Adekunle Hassan on being awarded an honorary Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) degree during the event. He praised Dr. Hassan’s N500 million donation to the School of Eye Health and his N500 million endowment for a Professorial Chair in Ophthalmology.
Speaking to the graduates, the governor urged them to follow the principles that the institution taught them and to become leaders, innovators, and problem solvers in their industries.
OOU’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ayodeji Agboola, and Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Prof. Toyin Ashiru, thanked Governor Abiodun for attending the convocation in their remarks. They highlighted significant accomplishments including the growth of academic programs, the construction of infrastructure, and the country’s prominence in technology as evidence of his administration’s unshakeable dedication to education.
