Over 11,000 other applications were defeated by Lukman Audu, a highly skilled Nigerian lawyer, to win the prestigious UK Chevening Scholarship for the 2024–2025 school year. He will be attending the University of Essex in England to pursue a Master of Laws in International Human Rights Law.
Lukman received training at the Nigerian Law School before being admitted to the Nigerian Bar. He earned a degree in International Law and Legal Studies from the University of Maiduguri.

Only 32 Nigerian scholars were chosen from thousands of applications, making this an extremely competitive accomplishment, Lukman said when he announced his award on LinkedIn. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) funds the Chevening Scholarship, which pays for postgraduate studies in the UK in full, including living expenses, travel, and visa fees.
Less than 2% of candidates were admitted, according to Lukman, who described the selection process as extremely difficult and noted that applicants competed worldwide. After more than seven years of professional experience with both domestic and foreign organisations, his perseverance and dedication finally paid off.
Throughout his career, he has worked to defend and advance the rights of women, children, displaced people, prisoners, and refugees. His pursuit of a graduate degree in human rights law was motivated by these encounters.
Lukman is excited to use this chance to broaden his knowledge and work with foreign specialists to address human rights concerns in Nigeria and beyond.
For their steadfast support during his trip, Lukman expressed his sincere gratitude to the Chevening Awards, the University of Essex, the UKinNigeria Embassy, his mentors, friends, and family.
