The House of Representatives will deliberate on a proposed bill aimed at securing sustainable funding for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The proposed legislation, titled “The NYSC Trust Fund (Establishment) Bill 2024,” seeks to create a dedicated Trust Fund to support skills acquisition, training, and empowerment initiatives for corps members, as well as to enhance the overall operations and infrastructure of the NYSC.
Sponsored by the lawmaker representing the Nasarawa/Toro Federal Constituency, the bill outlines that the Trust Fund will derive its funding from various sources, including 0.2% of the Consolidated Revenue Fund, federal grants, contributions from the private sector, and international aid.
A Board of Trustees will be responsible for managing the Fund, ensuring that it is utilized effectively for key projects such as corps member training, income-generating ventures, and the improvement of orientation camps and NYSC facilities nationwide.
If enacted, this bill aims to transform the NYSC into a more efficient and impactful institution by providing corps members with greater opportunities for self-sustenance and skill development, thereby enhancing their contributions to national development.
