Students Give a Generous Nigerian Security Guard a Trip Home as a Surprise — Gives Him $30,000
Recently, CBS News featured the inspirational story of James, a devoted security guard at Providence College in Nigeria, who received a life-changing gift from the kids he dutifully defends. It is a touching tale of generosity and community spirit.
James is renowned for his friendly disposition and pleasant grin, even though he works four nighttime hours every week. He is always up for a conversation, no matter the time of day. James, however, has been yearning to see his family in Nigeria for the past five years but has been unable to do so because of financial limitations.
Inspired by James’s enduring generosity and commitment, student organizer Brandon Reichart decided to use GoFundMe to set up a covert campaign to fulfill James’s desire.
The aim was uncomplicated: to gather sufficient funds to pay for a plane ticket to Nigeria and give James some extra cash for his journey.
The community’s reaction was nothing short of remarkable. Contributions flooded in, exceeding all projections and ultimately totaling a staggering $30,000. After the money was obtained, Brandon and his classmates were excited to tell James about the surprise.
James was given the gift that would change his life by Brandon and his friends, who had gathered in his office. James covered his face in shock and collapsed to the ground as Brandon said, “We started a GoFundMe to take care of our own because that’s what we do here at PC. We’re overwhelmed with emotion.” They have taken care of me for as long as I’ve been here, and since we take care of each other, we’re taking care of you too.
“We’re giving you a trip to Nigeria because you’re a part of the family,” he continued.
In addition to realizing James’s long-held desire to be with his family again, the touching act demonstrated Providence College’s tight-knit community spirit. The children showed the value of compassion and unity through their unselfish acts of kindness, proving that when people work together, dreams can come true.
