Teenage Girl Files Lawsuit Against JAMB for Removing Her Hijab.

Lawal Hameedat Adenike, a teenage girl, has sued the PEFTI CBT Centre in Ibadan, Oyo State, and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for allegedly pressuring her to take off her headscarf prior to the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The lawsuit was started by Basirat Ojo, her mother and attorney, who described what happened at the PEFTI CBT Centre on April 25, 2025. Ojo claims that her daughter, who wears the hijab as part of her religious duties, was refused admission to the examination room unless she took it off. Ojo stated that her daughter found the experience to be upsetting and humiliating, which prompted her to pursue legal action to address the infringement of her rights.

The complaint requests that PEFTI and JAMB issue a public apology that would be included in two national newspapers. It also calls for a judicial ruling that any policy requiring female candidates to take off their headscarves is unconstitutional, as well as compensation for the rights infringement.

Citing Section 38 of the Nigerian Constitution, which safeguards freedom of thought, conscience, and religion, Lawal’s attorney, Qousim Opakunle, underlined that the case is based on fundamental rights.
