After Delta State nursing students were disciplined for teasingly changing their welcoming chant during her recent visit, the Office of the First Lady of Nigeria has called for understanding.
The incident happened at the Dome Event Centre in Asaba, where 10,000 professional kits were donated to midwives by the Renewed Hope Initiative. Although the purpose of the gathering was to raise healthcare professionals’ spirits, a viral video showed Delta State College of Nursing Sciences students giving their song a hilarious twist.

The First Lady recognised the students’ enthusiasm in a statement issued by her Senior Special Assistant on Media, Busola Kukoyi, but she also emphasised the importance of striking a balance between discipline and freedom of speech.
While we acknowledge that schools have the right to enforce discipline, the statement also noted that kids frequently express themselves in a humorous and light-hearted way when they are excited.
Later, it was reported that some pupils had received questions about their involvement in the modified chants. The First Lady’s office praised the Delta State Government and guests for their cordial reception and explained that the purpose of her visit was to encourage midwives and help lower maternal mortality.
The statement went on to say, “We hope that this event continues to be a positive and motivating experience for all involved, as the First Lady’s visit was meant to inspire and uplift healthcare professionals.”
Her office emphasised that educational institutions should create spaces where students feel free to express themselves while upholding decorum, and encouraged the college to treat the situation fairly.
