With the opening of Nigeria’s first British independent school, Charterhouse Lagos, Lagos State has made significant strides in educational advancement. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu presided over the $150 million primary school’s opening and set the groundwork for its future secondary school on behalf of Secretary to the State Government Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin.
Charterhouse Lagos, which is situated on Ogombo Road in Lekki, strives to provide top-notch education by fusing Nigerian cultural values with British academic standards. By lowering the need for Nigerian families to send their kids overseas for high-quality education, the organisation hopes to preserve family bonds and boost the local economy.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, who spoke at the event, called the school a revolutionary turning point in Lagos’ educational history. He underlined that Charterhouse Lagos, a sister school of Charterhouse UK, combines a curriculum designed to meet the educational needs of Nigeria with its tradition of academic excellence.
“This dual focus ensures that our children excel at global universities while staying deeply connected to their roots,” he stated.
The founding of Charterhouse Lagos, he added, further solidifies Lagos State’s developing standing as a centre for educational innovation and opportunity.
Prominent individuals attended the unveiling ceremony, including Oba Abiodun Ogunbo and Ologombo of Ogombo Kingdom.

The school’s exceptional academic standards were commended by Mrs. Angela Enuwa, who also emphasised that students will have a competitive advantage thanks to its distinctive teaching methodology.
In addition, Mrs. Wunmi Tunde-Obe praised the university and invited doubters to come see the campus, saying:
“You’ll see why Charterhouse is revolutionary once you visit this location. This school’s presence in Lagos is genuinely revolutionary.
” She added that Charterhouse Lagos would bring in money for the nation by drawing students from all over Africa and beyond.
According to Charterhouse’s Director of Education John Todd, the project is the outcome of years of preparation and cooperation between the public and private sectors.
“Charterhouse Lagos provides that opportunity right here—no Nigerian family needs to send their children abroad for quality education anymore,” he stated.
With its secondary school set to open later this year, Charterhouse Lagos is positioned to reshape the educational landscape in Nigeria and West Africa.
