Tinubu Dissolved the Jim Obazee Committee in December, According to a Memo
A leaked document sent by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on November 29, 2023, instructs the Jim Obazee-led committee to complete its inquiry and turn in its final report by Friday, December 1, 2023, at the latest. News Direct has received this memo.
Obazee was designated by President Tinubu in July 2023 as a Special Investigator to look into the operations of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
At the time, Tinubu said that Obazee’s appointment would further his administration’s anti-corruption campaign since it was based on the core goal specified in Section 15(5) of the Nigerian constitution.
Obazee was also required to provide reports to the president personally.
President Tinubu stressed in his letter how important it is to complete the probe by the deadline.
Remember that the Daily Nigerian had reported that, despite the committee’s dissolution, Obazee had carried on its work much past the deadline for finishing it in an apparently unlawful way.
The President wrote the following in the letter headed “Expeditious conclusion of the Special Investigation into the Operations of the Central Bank of Nigeria”:
“I have noted your efforts and appreciate your devotion as a Special Investigator to probe the Central Bank of Nigeria and Related Entities, after your appointment in July 2023.
“I have faith in the objectivity and comprehensiveness of your inquiry. I appreciate you keeping the values that guide the financial system in our country.
Nevertheless, in order to allow the Central Bank’s leadership to continue implementing its dynamic changes, this examination must be completed as soon as possible.
The investigation’s conclusions will not only help with the urgent remedial measures that must be taken, but they will also offer priceless information for improving the Bank’s corporate governance and operations.
As a result, in order for it to be reviewed and put into effect, you must turn in your final report by Friday, December 1, 2023, at the latest.
